Chapter 1: Synopsis of This Study

The Book of Mormon confirms Jesus Christ fulfilled the 70th week of the seventy-weeks prophecy recorded in Daniel 9:24-27.  This ancient sacred history verifies the timing, manner, and words by which Jesus confirmed the new covenant pronounced by the Lord God of Israel in Jeremiah 31:31-34.  As such, it confounds false theories and doctrines that have arisen about these new covenant prophecies.[1]

A false doctrine the Book of Mormon decidedly confounds is a theory that there was to be a gap of an unspecified amount of time between the 69th and 70th weeks of Daniel 9:24-27 and that the 70th week is yet to be fulfilled.[2]  According to this false teaching, an end-time antichrist prince would fulfill the prophesied 70th week, not the Messiah, the Prince of Daniel 9:25,26.[3]

The Book of Mormon confounds this false doctrine by showing Jesus Christ confirmed His new covenant with a remote remnant of Israel soon after His death, resurrection, and ascension into heaven.[4]  This remnant was comprised principally of descendants of the tribe of Manasseh, the eldest son of Joseph, who was the eldest son of Jacob (Abraham’s grandson) and his wife Rachel.[5]

These descendants of Joseph sprang mainly from two families who fled Jerusalem in 600 BC,[6] around the time Daniel was taken captive from Jerusalem to Babylon.[7]  These two families were then led to Joseph’s land at the ends of the earth[8] where they grew into two opposing nations, one led by faithful men of God and the other led by men who rebelled against God and his faithful servants.[9]

Because the first generation of Book of Mormon people left Jerusalem near the time Daniel was taken captive, their set of records serve as an independent witness of the fulfillment of Daniel 9:24-27.  Of particular importance, they show how Jesus Christ confirmed the new covenant with this remnant of Israel in the fullness (meridian) of time after ministering to them for over 600 years[10] in Joseph’s land.[11]

Jesus Christ has again confirmed His new covenant in these latter days by restoring and manifesting His life-giving words preserved in the Book of Mormon.[12]  Through this plain and precious book, Jesus is now manifesting Himself as the eternal Word of God established in heaven unto all nations by way of the Holy Ghost, whom He called the Comforter and the Spirit of truth.[13]

Whosoever abides in Jesus Christ’s new covenant—which He has restored and confirmed in these latter days—will not perish but have everlasting life through faith on His name and reliance on His words.[14]  Come, then, and partake of His goodness and receive of His fullness so you may have eternal life through His divine grace.[15]  Come and be perfected in Him by relying solely upon His merits.[16]
